My 40’s – Where Lunch With Friends Is the New Night Out

So apparently I’ve been losing my cool edge without even realizing! Shocking I know, but somewhere along the way my inner cool meter has broken and I didn’t clue in. Who knew one could begin to lose themselves in play dates, the mystery of the single sock and grade 5 school projects.

It wasn’t until my girlfriend and I were chatting about the last time we’d taken time for a girls night out that I realized I’d been neglecting myself and my friends. Sure, we’re together often but that always includes our offspring. While I may adore my wacky children, there is something to be said for enjoying a full conversation without being interrupted….or even a paragraph from the mouth of a friend would qualify.

If you’re a parent of a child under the age of 14 who spends time in your vicinity, I’m sure you know what I’m referring to and are doing the mental math to think back to your last girls night.

Right now I don’t have time to do a night out but why not a lunch? Ah yes, I’ll become a NEW kind of cool and be a lady who lunches! If you can’t see the “cool” factor then please move along….this fits my schedule and my awesome friend Krista kindly agreed to meet me for lunch.

We both agreed that our destination would be Wendy’s, we’re both actively trying to lead a healthier lifestyle and have wanted to try the new salads so it was a no-brainer.

Wendy’s Fresh New Salads

It’s been over 30 years since Wendy’s introduced salads to their menus and both the restaurant and I have changed. No longer am I the person who sneers at veggies, these days I am the one who craves the fresh ingredients in creative combinations such as we see in the new Asian Cashew Chicken, BBQ Ranch Chicken and Taco Supremo Salads at Wendy’s.

These aren’t the salads of old, they’re packed with fresh, trendy ingredients, bold and vibrant. Wendy’s salads have some surprises for anyone expecting a mainstream salad, they’ve pumped it up a notch by using dressings and ingredients like cashews and edamame which prove that salad doesn’t have to be a snore.

Krista and I were both pleased to read that Wendy’s new salads are 50% lower in fat grams, 29% lower in sodium, and 61% lower in saturated fat. We chose to order half sized portions but the full sized would be perfect for dinner or when we have a larger appetite.

I chose the new BBQ Ranch Chicken salad which was simply amazing! With a variety of fresh lettuce, spinach, roasted corn, freshly hand-diced tomatoes, shredded sharp cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon, and a honey BBQ sauce this salad surprised me.

It came with a BBQ Ranch dressing which is made with real buttermilk, parmesan cheese, ancho chili peppers, honey and brown sugar. Frankly I wish this dressing was sold in bottles, it would go with so many things in our house.

Krista chose the Taco Supremo and to be honest she had low expectations. It seems that she didn’t much care for many when she ordered in a restaurant. This is yet another thing I dig about my friend, she’s willing to try new things and will happily tell you the honest truth.

Well thankfully Krista really enjoyed the Taco Supremo!!

The Taco Supremo comes with fresh lettuce, fresh diced tomatoes, salsa, shredded cheese and meaty chili, sour cream and taco chips on the side. It was fun to watch Krista prepare it, she is apparently the master of building whereas I’m sure I would have left a HUGE mess.

Wendy’s Salads Are Fresh

Choosing Wendy’s new salads was a hit, their chicken is 100% premium all white chicken breast which is grilled on site and served hot with each salad. Every tomato served is hand sliced right there in the kitchen. Each Wendy’s locations have actual salad spinners in the kitchens, they’re used daily because they wash and hand-chop heads of romaine and iceberg every day and mix it with a triple-washed leafy spring mix made with 9 different greens.

Each ingredient was fresh and delicious, the dressings were unique and created wonderful flavour combinations. These ladies give Wendy’s new salads 2 thumbs up.

We really enjoyed ourselves and for an hour we forgot the rest of the world and just caught up. We laughed over nothing that would make sense to anyone else and just plain enjoyed each other. This is precious time which I’d been missing.

When is the last time you’ve enjoyed time with a girlfriend? Why not consider heading out to do a Ladies Lunch with a friend at Wendy’s? I promise the new salads will impress you and you won’t ever regret carving some time out with a friend.

It may not be a night out but I must say I actually enjoyed it even more. Roll on ’40s I’m ready for ya!

  1. My girlfriend ‘night out’ have long been coffee dates…I love coffee and chatting over a latte is a great way to catch up for us. My BFF, Janet, works full time but is off every Wednesday so that is a day that we usually have time to meet up. I would love to try the Wendy’s BBQ Chicken Ranch…it looks delicious!!
