WIN a Samsung Galaxy S5 & Gear Fit from @Telus #FitNHealthy

In January of this year I committed to Getting Healthy & Fit and tryly change my lifestyle to a healthy, active one and I’m now truly into the groove. Last month I talked about how Going to the Gym When You’re Out of Shape is SCARY and encourage everyone to overcome that hesitation and just do it.

This month I want to update you all, as my new Paleo eating lifestyle is a month old and my exercise has continued. It’s been a bit of a learning curve, I’ve had to learn what foods are processed and where sugars and “bad” fats are hidden. Essentially I’ve been eating whole foods, tons of veggies, proteins and fruits. Paleo isn’t for everyone but man oh man it’s working for me.

I have more energy, less migraines, less bloating and an over-all feeling of doing good for my body. I’ve also lost 19 pounds which tells me I’m doing something right.

I also upped my game at the gym, I’ve been attending my favourite class which combines Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi as usual but added in some cardio and weights each visit.

Telus sent me the Samsung Galaxy 5 and a Gear Fit to help me track my progress and I am super excited at my experience with it over the past 3 weeks.

The GALAXY S5 and Gear Fit help support healthier lifestyles

  • The GALAXY S5, with its enhanced S Health software and hardware, including a built-in heart rate sensor, is designed to be your personal fitness tracker, leading you through your fitness routines daily and consistently.
  • Set your goals and achieve them with the help of GALAXY S5’s pedometer and S Health’s constant tracking of your condition, walking distance, calories, speed, duration, and more.
  • To complete the package, the new, wearable Gear Fit connects to your GALAXY S5, providing  real-time updates on your condition, walking distance, calories, speed, duration and more.

For the first time I am seriously considering giving up my iPhone for an android. The apps I use regularly are user-friendly, the camera is FAR superior and the Samsung Galaxy S5 feels great in my hand. I plan on using it for the next month before truly making a decision but this is the closest I’ve come with any of the phones I’ve ever reviewed.

I could talk for ages about the Galaxy S5 itself but today I want to focus on the Gear Fit because it has impressed me and helped me tremendously with my goals so I’ll be brief with my 1st impressions.

Highlights of the Samsung Galaxy S5

Kick Ass Camera – This is the most amazing camera I’ve experienced on a phone. It features a 16MP camera which has the “World’s Fastest” Auto Focus at 0.3 seconds, HDR and more options than I can type.

High Speed Data – There’s no waiting for apps with this puppy, it features an innovative Wi-Fi technology for boosting data speed, Download Booster, which bonds Wi-Fi and TELUS’ 4G LTE Network simultaneously…which means it’s FAST.

Protection – The S5 has a dust and water resistant body which protects from short term immersion in water in dust. It also has Ultra-power Saving Mode which gives users up to 24 hours of battery life on only 10% of a charge….meaning that I won’t kill my battery unintentionally.

Samsung Galaxy Gear Fit Features

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is enhanced with S Health Software is a pedometer, heart rate monitor, food tracker and exercise log all in one.

Exercise Tracker

Gear Fit allows you to track your exercise and progress right on your arm. Simply choose the type of exercise you’re participating in and your goal and get moving. The only downside to this is that Yoga isn’t included but I used the pedometer for those classes.

Nutrition Tracker

Until today I’ve been using a food tracker which was located on my desktop, with the Gear Fit I can track my intake vs calories burned right from the phone! I hadn’t finished filling in my foods for yesterday so don’t worry about the low calories friends.

The pedometer tracks your steps through the day, allowing you to make a goal and watch it as your day goes on with a simple glance at your wrist. The app even awards you ribbons as you achieve your goals!

Heart Rate

Both the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Gear Fit have built in heart rate monitors, for those of us intent on calorie burning this is essential during workouts.

Summary: Samsung Gear fit is perfect for my needs, it helps me track my overall progress and keeps an ongoing record so I can compare days and how far I’ve come.

It’s attractive and light on my arm, I wear it everywhere and don’t feel like it’s an obvious fitness device as it looks more like a high-tech watch. The Gear Fit offers instant notifications of emails, SMS, incoming calls, & 3rd party apps to keep you connected. It is also kitted out with 4G of space to upload your music, just connect wireless headphones and you’re all set.

The idea of tracking everything including heart rate even, would make the journey to a better, happier me a much reachable goal. I could so use this. Being someone who is very tactile oriented, this is just up my alley *crossing my fingers* !!!

  67. One day I decided that it enough is enough. I told myself that I would need to lose 20lbs and right now I’ve lost 13 lbs within the last 3 months just by changing my portions and what I eat. 76. Hi Julie! After many, many Day 1’s and many months of sobriety in between, I relapsed once again. This time I have added something new to my tool box: health, nutrition, and exercise, along with a Naturopathic Doctor and coach. I know I shouldn’t make early sobriety complicated with too many demands, but this is working!!!! I’ve never felt better! I am eating low carb/high protein. I am taking supplements, doing yoga and walking. Similar to Paleo, you can understand the work involved calculating carbs, etc… Weight loss is a secondary goal. I am working hard to heal my gut from years of vodka abuse. It doesn’t matter how well I eat if I drink. The boozer’s gut doesn’t absorb the good stuff! I’m also working on a healthy liver. This means eating good fats. So yes, the S5 and Gear Fit would greatly reduce the *work* that is going into my *work* :-) Tracking exercise is a wonderful added bonus. This is an awesome give-away, Julie! Thanks for doing this!

I have lost 15 lbs in the last several months but I know that I could loose a lot more if I would exercise.

  79. A few years ago I was hit by a car while I was riding my road bike. At the time I was training to do my first try-a-tri triathlon. My helmet was broken into 3 pieces and I was terrified to get back on a bike. I started riding again recently with hopes of picking up that goal where I left off. At 240lbs thinking about doing a tri is no easy decision, but I’m determined to get back at it.

So these tools would help me get back on track!

I want to get fit again because I used to love doing things like mountain climbing, hiking, playing tennis, biking, swimming etc. Now I have a harder time enjoying such things because I’m so out of shape. I am working on continuing to do those things so I can get better at them again.

  137. Hubz and I have recently discovered that we are…old! Grandparents! SO…we have decided not sit around for that. We have cleaned up our diets and started, slowly but surely, to put more movement into our lives. I think this would help usto stay organized and focused on our goal to get back to being fit…and to stay that way.

  138. The food and exercise trackers worked really well for me about a year ago when I was trying to slim down for my wedding . They would come in really handy, helped me lose 16 pounds before my wedding.

Thanks for the chance to win :)

  145. As a 911 dispatcher, I work long 12 hour night shifts. It’s the most rewarding job I’ve ever had, but also the most physically and mentally grueling job I’ve ever had. Working nights really mess up your body as a whole. I’ve gained almost 60 pounds since starting my career 9 years ago. At 32, I know I’ve got to get this weight off. My job graciously provided us with a tread mill. I’ve been walking on the tread mill during my lunch breaks, and taking my lunch to work, instead of eating fast food every night. It’s been slow going, but I’m feeling better day by day. I would love to win this giveaway! Good luck everyone. :)

  146. I am a Zumba instructor, but I don’t always engage in the healthiest habits. I haven’t been able to reach my pre-pregnancy weight, and my daughter is now 5. These are all reasons why I want to start living better… but most of all…. I notice that I feel differently than I used to… I’m not able to run like I used to, I’m winded more easily, and I get tired when playing with my daughter. I want to be able to keep up with her, and feel better.

  147. I’ve been going on the treadmill every night for two weeks and for hikes on the weekend to try and get back into shape after having a baby 18 months ago. I’m just trying to fit into my old clothes lol! I’d love something that could help me stay motivated and keep track of what I’ve done and what I need to do.

  148. I want to get back to some serious walking (and other exercises too)! I’ve never tried anything like the Gear Fit and it would be great to track my progress and exercise so easily!

  149. I am trying to be more active and I think seeing how much I have been doing during the day will encourage me to do more. I will set a goal and try to meet it every day.

  150. This will really motivate me to exercise. I keep saying I will
Try to exercise and be fit, but I never end up doin it.
I hope I can set an alarm that beeps n pushes me to be
Active everyday. I have to lose my love handle and
    Improve on breathing exercises.

  151. Now that I am feeling better after the car accident I am starting to try to include more walking again and I would love the pedometer feature!

  152. This would really help with my overall health, I would be able to get a better understanding of what times of days I have the most energy and where I need to improve. My first focus would be improving my nutrition because I have a goal to be a better calorie counter and it would be way easy with the Samsung Galaxy S5 and gear fit from Telus.

  153. I would the nutrition tracker will be helpful in noting my caloric intake and making sure I am eating healthy.

  154. This could probably help me with any fitness goal since I don’t do any fitness right now. It would be fun to have a watch like this it would be motivating.

  155. I would use the pedometer for walking & hiking. However, I would also use it for cycling, which might actually motivate me to get out on my bike more than I have recently!

  156. I’m a visual person so I enjoy seeing where I’ve been and need to go. If love to get back into running.

  157. I have a hard time staying motivated to exercise and eat healthy instead of quickly (I really hate cooking so I tend to grab whatever is convenient). This would definitely help keep me accountable and on track to getting healthier.

  158. I want this so bad. In the last two months, I’ve lost 17lb! I actually would use this phone to watch a live stream or movies while I do cardio on the elliptical among other things. Trying to lose 15lb more.

  159. Even though I am older, I am quite good with technology because my son helps me out. The heart rate sensor would be great for me as I am getting older and need to monitor that, and this is actually the phone I have been looking into buying for myself but it is quite expensive. So thank you for the opportunity.

  160. I would love to start tracking what I am doing now, and what I am eating, and then start setting some goals. I often feel like I’m in a catch-22 (have medical issues which mean I am in pain a lot of the time, and that makes it hard to exercise, but if I exercised more it would help with pain management).

  161. The pedometer would be a great help – as I’m trying to reach 10,000 steps per day, on a regular basis.

  162. I’d like to work on endurance (it’s sad how quickly I get tired) and strength (partially because muscle burns more calories than fat!). Improving on my eating habits probably wouldn’t hurt either, so hopefully the Nutrition Tracker helps me be more mindful of what I’m eating.

  163. I would love to give this to my husband. He started a new excersize program with the hospital and it would be great for him.

  164. I have been trying to lose weight and this would give me the encouragement to reach my goals being monitored, instead of writing it down on paper!

  165. Losing weight. I really need to do that to make me feel comfotable in my own skin and winning this will help.

  166. Between having three pregnancies, quitting smoking and then getting cancer, i have gained a lot of weight and i would just like to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight….this would surely help me!
    Thanks for the chance!!

  167. My fitness goal is to do strength training 3 times a day and walk for 40-60 minutes every day.

  168. Ive been having serious problems with my joints, which demotivates me. Something that would help me set & keep watch of goals would be extremely helpful

  169. I currently have goals to lose 40 pounds. It has a built in heart rate monitor!! That is amazing, that would be so handy. I’m doing some really intense cardio programs and I would love to keep track of my heart rate easily.
